Вероятно древните гърци също са го отглеждали и може би те са го занесли за първи път в Италия. Известнaта винена историчка и критичка Джансис Робинсън идентифицира сорта грозде като този, от който се е правело виното „Apianum”, толкова обичано от римляните.
